Scam call practice for parents: a safe rehearsal before the real thing

Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Telling a parent about scams helps a little. Hearing one, in a safe setting, helps much more. A practice call is a short, made-up scam call in a loved one’s voice, with their permission, so the first time they meet the pattern isn’t the real one. Here is how it works and what keeps it safe.

Why practice works better than a warning

Scams rely on panic and speed. A parent who has already heard “I’ve been in an accident, please don’t tell Dad” in a rehearsal is more likely to pause on the real call. It also takes the shame out: the practice call is an ordinary family drill, not a test of whether they’re careful.

How a Countersign practice call works

  1. You ask the person, and they agree. Nothing is placed without their consent.
  2. You choose a scenario, like a lost phone, and it is in your voice.
  3. The call is short, never asks for real money, and always reveals itself as a drill.
  4. Afterwards you both see what happened: whether they asked for the family phrase, called back, or tried to help.

Safety rules built in

  • Consent first: the person you call has agreed.
  • Sensible hours: calls are placed between 10 and 19 local time, not at night.
  • Short: the call ends within 90 seconds.
  • Never to voicemail: no cloned message is left behind.
  • Always revealed: the person is told it was a drill.
  • Limits per person: so practice never turns into harassment.
  • Custom scenarios are screened and some topics are off limits.

How to talk to a parent about it

Be light: “I’d like to run a fake scam call on you, in my voice, so you can see how it feels. Nobody loses anything, and I’ll tell you how you did.” Make clear that it’s to practise, not to catch them out. Then celebrate what they did right.

Who it’s not for

  • Anyone who hasn’t agreed, or who finds calls frightening: talk first, or practise the safe word by hand.
  • Someone with memory loss who might be distressed: talk to a doctor or carer first.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to practise a scam call with my parents?

It can be, if they agree first and it is short, clearly a drill, and never asks for real money. Countersign builds those rules in.

Does it use my real voice?

Yes, but only with your consent, and the call always reveals itself as a practice call.

Can I use it without telling them?

No. A practice call needs the person’s agreement first.
