Scam protection for seniors who don’t use a smartphone
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
Most scam protection apps assume everyone has a smartphone. Many older parents don’t, or they won’t install a new app. The good news is that the most important protections don’t need one: a safe word, a call-back habit and a check by text message. Here is a setup that works on any mobile phone.
What works on a basic phone
- A family safe word, practised aloud.
- A call-back habit: hang up and ring a number from a card by the phone.
- Text checks: with Countersign, a parent texts “CHECK” and a name, and the real person is asked.
- Replies by text: a parent answers a family member’s request with YES or NO.
A set-up you can finish in an afternoon
- Choose a safe word together and say it aloud a few times.
- Write the key numbers on a card by the phone: you, siblings, the bank.
- Save your Countersign number in their phone as “Countersign check”.
- Show them how to text CHECK and a name, once, with you watching.
- Agree the rule: no money, codes or gift cards on a call. Hang up, then check.
What a parent sees
They text “CHECK Anna”, Countersign asks Anna on her phone, and a text comes back saying whether she confirmed it’s her. They don’t need an app, a password or a login.
Other things worth doing
- Ask the bank to add alerts and a trusted contact on the account.
- Turn on spam call filtering with their carrier.
- Keep the list of real numbers where they can find it in a panic.
- Check in often. Isolation makes scammers’ jobs easier.
Limits
- A parent who forgets the steps under stress can still be fooled. Practise, and keep the card where they can see it.
- Text check replies depend on mobile coverage and your carrier.
- This reduces risk and does not remove it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a parent without a smartphone use Countersign?
Yes. They can text “CHECK” and a name, and reply YES or NO to requests, from any mobile phone.
What’s the best scam protection for a basic phone?
A safe word, a call-back habit, a printed card of real numbers and a way to check with the real person, such as a text check.
Should I block unknown calls on my parent’s phone?
It helps to filter spam calls, but a real emergency can come from an unknown number, so pair it with a check habit.
