Is this Amazon text a scam?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read
Amazon really does send texts about orders and deliveries, which is why fakes work. The test is simple: does it match something you actually ordered, and does the same message appear in your Amazon account? Amazon says to check your own account instead of tapping links. Here is how to tell, and where to report it.
The short answer
If the text is about an order you didn’t place, comes from a number you don’t recognise, or asks for a password, code or gift card, it’s a scam. If it’s about an order you did place, check it in the Amazon app or on amazon.com yourself. We can’t see your message, so no page can tell you for certain. If you’re unsure, don’t use the link: go to the company’s own app or website, or call a number you already trust.
What Amazon says about fake texts
- A text may not be genuine if it comes from a number you don’t recognise or one with a country code different from your country.
- Warning signs include orders or deliveries you’re not expecting, misspelled links and odd formatting.
- Amazon points you to your Message Center in your account: genuine messages from Amazon appear there.
- Amazon says it will never ask for your password or one-time codes, will never ask you to buy a gift card, and won’t take payment by phone or email.
Common fake Amazon texts
- An order you didn’t place, with a link or a phone number to “cancel” it.
- A login or security alert asking you to follow a link to end a session or verify your account.
- A delivery problem asking you to confirm details or pay a fee.
- A refund that needs you to share a bank login or code.
What to do now
- Don’t click the link, reply, or call a phone number in the text.
- Open the Amazon app or type amazon.com yourself, and look at Your Orders and the Message Center.
- Report it to Amazon at amazon.com/reportascam. If you’re not a customer, you can forward it to reportascam@amazon.com.
- Forward the text to 7726 and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- Delete it and block the number.
