The best apps to protect elderly parents from scams, by what you need

Updated October 14, 2026 · 8 min read

No single app protects a parent from every scam, and the right choice depends on the scam you’re worried about. Here’s an honest guide, grouped by what each type of tool actually does, with prices where we could verify them. We make Countersign, so we’re not neutral. Facts about other products come from their public listings and press coverage on 14 October 2026, are linked below, and may have changed. If something here is wrong, email support@gocountersign.com and we’ll fix it.

Call blockers and spam filters

Apps such as Nomorobo, Hiya, Truecaller, Call Control and YouMail reduce robocalls and flag known scam numbers. They’re useful and often free or cheap. Their limit: a scammer calling as “your grandchild” from a spoofed or new number may look like any other call, and a cloned voice isn’t something a number list can recognise. Built-in options help too: iPhone’s Silence Unknown Callers and Android’s spam call filter.

Scam detection

Detection tools look for scam patterns in texts, voicemails or calls. Savi is a paid family app (reported at $7.99 a month or $62.99 a year) with text filtering, voicemail screening and a live “On Call” mode. Free web checkers, including our own scam text checker and Savi’s Scamwise, give a second opinion on a message you’ve already received.

Identity verification

This is the gap the other tools leave: when a call sounds exactly like your child, the only reliable test is asking the real person. Countersign and KinConfirm both send a request to the relative’s own phone, which they confirm. Countersign also works by text for a parent without a smartphone, supports Android as well as iPhone, and adds a family safe word and practice calls.

Practice and training

Practice helps because scams work by panic. ScamDrill runs consented phishing-style drills by email and text. Countersign’s practice calls rehearse the phone call in a family member’s own voice, with their permission, and never ask for real money.

What no app can do for you

  1. Agree a [family safe word](/guides/family-safe-word) and practise it.
  2. Hang up and call back on a number you already have.
  3. Make a rule: nobody sends money because of an incoming call, text or message about an emergency.
  4. Talk about it, kindly and often, so nobody is embarrassed to check.

A sensible layered setup

For many families: a call blocker or the phone’s built-in filter for volume; a verification tool plus a safe word for the family-impersonation scam; practice once or twice a year; and a free scam checker for anything that looks odd. None is perfect alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to protect elderly parents from scams?

It depends on the scam. Call blockers reduce robocalls, detection tools flag suspicious messages, and identity-verification tools like Countersign help when someone claims to be a relative. Rules like a safe word matter as much as apps.

Can an app stop AI voice cloning scams?

No app can recognise every cloned voice. The most reliable defence is verifying the real person another way: a family safe word, a call back on a saved number, or an identity check on their own phone.

Is there a free way to protect elderly parents from scam calls?

Yes: free call blockers, your phone’s built-in spam and unknown-caller settings, a family safe word, and free scam checkers. Countersign is also free for your first family.

Do elderly parents need a smartphone for these apps?

Most need one. Countersign can be used by text message alone.
