Family safe word app: what to look for
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
A family safe word is a good idea that usually fails in practice: it gets chosen once, half the family forgets it, and nobody has ever said it aloud under pressure. An app is worth having only if it fixes those problems. Here is what to look for, and where Countersign fits.
Why a word in your notes app isn’t enough
A safe word on paper or in a message thread protects nobody if the person on the phone has never rehearsed using it. Scammers also rely on panic: a frightened parent forgets the word, or feels rude asking for it. A tool should make the habit easier, not just store the word.
What a good family safe word app should do
- Keep the word private. It should never be texted in plain form or shown on a screen anyone can glance at.
- Show who actually knows it. Choosing a word means little if you can’t tell who has learned it.
- Let people practise. Rehearsing out loud is what makes someone remember it in a real call.
- Offer a second check. If the caller can’t give the word, or the word was leaked, you need another way to confirm it’s really them.
- Work for the least technical person in the family, not just the person who installed it.
- Never be your only defence. It should say plainly that it reduces risk and does not remove it.
How Countersign does each of those
- You choose the phrase, and each family member learns it and confirms they know it. The phrase is never stored in a readable form, and it is not sent in a text.
- You can see which members still need to learn it, and gentle reminders go to them.
- With a person’s permission, Countersign places a practice call in your own voice with a made-up scam that never asks for real money. Afterwards you see what they did.
- If a call asks for money, you send a check to the real person’s own phone. They answer yes or no, and you see the result. A parent without a smartphone can answer by text.
Where it may not fit
- It is a web app you add to your Home Screen. It is not in the App Store or Google Play yet.
- On iPhone, push alerts work only from the Home Screen version; otherwise Countersign texts you first.
- It can’t stop a scammer from calling. It helps your family notice and check, which lowers the risk.
What it costs
Free for your first family of 3 people, with 3 scam checks a month. First Class adds up to 3 families of 12 people, unlimited scam checks and all the practice scenarios: $5.99 a month in most countries, less where incomes are lower. See plans. Safety basics, like asking the real person and the family phrase, are never behind a paywall.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app for a family safe word?
Yes. Countersign lets you set a family phrase, see who has learned it, practise using it, and check a suspicious call with the real person. It is free for your first family of 3.
Is a safe word in a group chat safe?
It’s weaker. Anyone with access to the chat, or the person’s unlocked phone, can see it. Keep it out of text and share it by voice.
Do all family members need to install the app?
No. A parent can respond to a check by text, with nothing installed.
Does a safe word app stop AI voice cloning scams?
No tool can promise that. It helps your family notice and check, which lowers the risk of sending money to a fake.
