How to protect parents who live far away from phone scams

Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Distance is what scammers rely on: you can’t knock on the door, and your parent may not know your friends, your new number or your plans. A plan for the long-distance family needs to work without you in the room. Here is one that does.

Why distance raises the risk

  • A call that “you’re in trouble” is harder to disprove when you’re abroad or hours away.
  • Time zones make it hard to reach the real person quickly.
  • Parents may not hear your voice for days, so a fake voice seems more normal.

A plan you can set up remotely

  1. On a video call, choose a safe word together and have your parent say it aloud.
  2. Send a card of real numbers for them to keep by the phone, including a second family contact in their time zone.
  3. Agree the rule: no money, codes or gift cards after a call, even if it sounds like you.
  4. Set up a text check, so your parent can text CHECK and your name and you are asked on your phone.
  5. Run a practice call with their permission, so the first time isn’t the real one.
  6. Tell them the real news: if you ever need money, you’ll use a way you’ve agreed.

How Countersign helps at a distance

You can see whether your parent has learned the family phrase, send a practice call in your voice, and respond to their checks from anywhere. If a call comes while you’re on a flight, your parent’s check waits for you, and the rule says that until you answer, nothing is sent.

Add a second contact

Name a sibling, neighbour or friend near your parent whom they can ring in a panic. Tell them the plan too. A scam that isolates your parent loses power when they have someone to ask.

When you’re travelling

Tell your parents when you’re abroad and how to reach you. “Stranded abroad” scams work best when the victim doesn’t know your plans. See stranded-abroad scams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I protect my elderly parents when I live abroad?

Agree a safe word on a video call, give them a card of real numbers and a second contact nearby, set a no-money-after-a-call rule, and use a way to check with you remotely.

What if I can’t be reached when they check?

Agree the rule that nothing is sent until you answer. A real emergency can wait for a real confirmation.
