Is this FedEx text a scam?

Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read

A text from “FedEx” with a tracking code, a link and a request to set delivery preferences or pay a fee is a classic scam. FedEx says it doesn’t request payment or personal information through unsolicited mail, email or text. Check the parcel on fedex.com yourself, and don’t use the link. Here is the rest of the checklist.

The short answer

If you’re not expecting a FedEx delivery, or the text pushes you to a link to pay or give details, it’s very likely fake. FedEx says it doesn’t ask for payment or personal information in exchange for releasing a package. We can’t see your message, so no page can tell you for certain. If you’re unsure, don’t use the link: go to the company’s own app or website, or call a number you already trust.

What fake FedEx texts do

  • Show a tracking code and ask you to enter delivery preferences. The FTC described this pattern, where the link goes to a scammer’s site built to steal information.
  • Ask for a small fee to release or redeliver a package.
  • Use look-alike web addresses that are misspelled or altered versions of fedex.com. FedEx’s own page also warns about links to .shop addresses.
  • Add urgency: act now or the package goes back.

What to do now

  1. Don’t reply, click or open attachments.
  2. If you have a parcel coming, go to fedex.com or the FedEx app and enter the tracking number yourself.
  3. Forward the message to abuse@fedex.com (FedEx’s US page), then delete it.
  4. Forward the text to 7726, and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  5. Block the sender.

If you clicked, or paid

  • Tell your card issuer straight away and ask for a replacement card.
  • Change passwords you entered, and anywhere you reuse them.
  • If you lost money or personal data, FedEx suggests contacting the FTC, the FBI’s IC3 (ic3.gov) or local police.
